Happy Happy New Shoes!! (And new shorts too!)
With both my beloved Brooks Infiniti 2's and my Brooks Launch nearing 350 miles, it was time for some new shoes. However, my Infiniti's are becoming extinct and there were none left in my size. ***GASP*** What is a runner to do? Since I know at some point I will need to try something else, I decided to order the Brooks Ravenna's.
I believe they are supposed to be the comparable shoe. I received them in the mail today and it was love at first sight.
How cute are they for summer? They totally match my new shorts that I had to order so that I wouldn't have to pay $8 for shipping. I know, makes total sense.
And they have other colors I can buy for winter. (Because THAT is what is most important, lol!)
I also purchased a new pair of Launch for my track and tempo workouts. They are so light and comfy. I just feel faster when I put them on. And who doesn't love a lime green shoe?
For racing, I wear the ST4 which are AWESOME!!! My lucky shoes!
Seriously, if you are in any other shoe besides Brooks, you are doing yourself a dis-service.
I LOVE my Brooks shoes!! (Can you tell I am a Brooks-kinda gal?)
*Side-note- this is why I still wear 'civilian' clothes and shoes that are 10 years old. I spend all of my $ on running clothes and shoes. So much more fun!
Runningly Yours,
What a long, strange trip its been.. Boston Part 1
I need to preface that I LOVE the Boston marathon. I love the crowds, the expo, the city, it is just awesome. I love, love, love the course. Moreso than I remembered from last year. Rolling hills are my favorite! I was SO excited to run my heart out at Boston. Seriously, I could barely contain myself. But more on that later.
Anyways, this was an...interesting trip. We got in Thursday night after a looonnnggg day of travel. Matt and I went to the Barking Crab for a late dinner and went back to our hotel to get some shut-eye.
Friday morning came and it was cloudy and rainy outside. I went to the treadmill and did my 6 miles with strides and felt SUPER!! Boston here I come!! My legs felt awesome! We met Terri and Mark for a Trader Joe's trip and proceeded to the expo. We were walking around quite a bit in the damp, cold, air which in hindsight was probably not so good for me. We stopped at the Nike store to write on the Great Wall of Boston.
Expo time! We got our numbers and walked around.
I should have realized that there was something wrong when, after about an hour at the expo, I felt tired and not really into it anymore. I did perk up when meeting Steve from Brooks ID and I probably embarrassed myself a little bit..(but she's cute!) I told him my goal on video- an exuberant 2:48 I knew I could do it! He sent me off with and awesome Brooks duffel and some Brooks arm warmers. I *LOVE* BROOKS!!! I was super happy!
Terri and I sat down to watch a video of the course. I look like I am seeing Santa Claus! I love this course!

After the expo, we went to eat at Bella Vista in the North End. The food was PHENOMENAL! Seriously so good. After dinner we went home. We finally made it off the T at about 8:30 pm. By that time I felt drained, like I was getting a cold. I figured it was just from walking around in the rain, traveling, etc. Boy was I wrong.
Matt ended up violently ill all night Friday. We thought it must be food poisoning as he was so sick so suddenly. Saturday morning I began to feel queasy. Maybe it was just in my head. So I tried some coffee. About 10 minutes later it came up. O.K. , maybe just nerves, lack of sleep.. Tried to run on the treadmill. That lasted about 2 minutes. I was SO weak. Came back to the room. Could not eat or drink anything. I started to cry. This was the most important day for carbs and hydration and I could not stomach anything. I started vomiting around 1pm. I was completely devastated. My head was pounding, I could keep nothing in me. I have not been sick all year long. I could not help but think- Why me? And I know that I have a great life, and it seems silly to be upset over this to some. But for me, it was awful. I had worked SO hard to prepare for Boston. Although it is not a goal race, I was looking at it as a major stepping stone.
We laid in bed ALL DAY and night Saturday. I finally stopped feeling nauseous Sunday at about 12:30am. My head was pounding but I thought I might still be able to run well. I woke up at 7am feeling much better and immediately tried to get in all of the carbs and fluids I could. I did a 4 mile jog and felt pretty good. We went to watch our friend Wendy run the BAA 5k- she did awesome, a 3 minute PR!!

We went for breakfast after the race. I ate pancakes and was hydrating like a mad woman. We came back to the hotel and I was already super tired. I took a nap, shower, and began my pre-race relaxation rituals...(girly pampering stuff)
I went to sleep at about 8 pm. Midnight I woke up sick again. This time it was the other *fun* flu symptom. Bad. I was up going another 4 times in the middle of the night. This could not be happening. I thought I was in the clear but my stomach had other plans. I was hopeful that it would be gone by 10am start time, but I knew I was losing more and more of the little I was able to replenish myself with on Sunday. I slept through my alarm on Monday morning- on race day! I never do that regardless! Luckily we set Matt's phone as a back-up 30 minutes later! I woke up still going to the restroom. It was worse. I was completely devastated. Should I even try to run?
Runningly Yours,
Run For Ryan House, A Success!
What a day for a race! I woke up at 4:00 am and ate my rice/rice milk/honey mixture. I had some coffee and some Gatorade to complete my healthy breakfast. Lol! We headed over to Mark and Terri’s as they live pretty close to the start line and we wanted to go together.
Once we arrived at the race, Terri and I went for our 2 mile warm-up. When we returned, Matt was nowhere to be found! He had my race shoes, D Tag, and the race was starting in 10 minutes! Ahhhh!!!! I had our good friend Rick, who was announcing the race, call for him over the mic. I was a little frantic (shocking) but Matt and I found each other and I was able to change my shoes with plenty of time. About 5 minutes before the gun, I realized that I really had to pee and the line was so long, I would never make it in time. Coach found me a different restroom and I was able to run there and back with minutes to spare. That was a lifesaver!
At the start line, Rick started giving the shout-outs. This run was very competitive on the female side so I started to get a little nervous. Sally Meyerhoff was there (and won!). She is a 2:35 marathoner and an incredible runner. I am in awe of her! Susan Loken was there as well. She is getting back into training to qualify for the Olympic Trials. She has already run in the 2004 and 2008 trials. I was so happy to meet her! Katie Ellis was also there as a headliner athlete. Katie is an AMAZING triathlete, like world class amazing! She is just the nicest person too! I knew it would be a great race!
Mile 1- 6:17- Yay! I didn’t start out too fast!

Mile 2- 6:36
Mile 3-6:24
Mile 4- 6:46
Mile 5-7:11 (pretty bummed about this split, it was uphill and with a strong headwind, but I shouldn’t have been that off my goal pace)
Mile 6-6:52
Mile 7-6:34
Mile 8-5:56
Mile 9- 5:39
Mile 10-5:53
Mile 11-6:03
Mile 12- 5:50
Mile 13-5:54
.1-5:38 pace

Official Finish time – 1:22:35 6:18 per mile average pace.
In hindsight I wished I had pushed more on the hills, and I should have been a little faster on the downhills. Easier said now that it is over though! However, I felt it was a great race because:
1. I thought about keeping control of my form the entire time and not ‘collapsing’.
2. I used rhythmic breathing to try to stay calm and focused.
3. My back doesn’t hurt today which means I wasn’t tensing up.
4. My stomach wasn’t in knots at the finish line.
5. I was second female, third overall finisher.
6. I PR’d on a tougher course.
7. My new ST 4’s were perfect!
8. Got to meet up with some other fantastic female runners- Katie and Susan!

With MWC after I crossed. He was able to make it to mile 10 to offer some encouragement! Boy did that help!
Congrats to my amazing friends Terri, Mark, and DK who all placed in their age groups and ran amazing races on a very high mileage week. My dear friends Ken, Jan, and Jim also ran the 5k. Great job and big congrats to them as well. I feel so lucky to have such amazing runner friends!
Congrats to Coach John who WON the 5k with a time of 16:58!! I wonder what it feels like to be THAT fast?
I really had a great time at the race. It was so organized- however, with running brain I had no idea where to go once I entered DC Ranch! Lol! Matt said “But it was an out and back course, how could you not know where to go?!” I know, I am just not very observant! The post-race food was amazing and they were giving out Myoplex like it was going out of style. I LOVE that stuff! So thanks Ryan House for the amazing race. Count me in for next year!

South Mountain 22 Miler
This morning I had a 22 mile run scheduled for South Mountain. I got decked out in my new Brooks Nightlife ID uniform. It came in the mail yesterday and I love it! It is really comfy and I am super happy to represent my favorite running company.
We had a great group of runners, Matt, Terri (someone needs to tell her that if she can talk, she should run faster!)
, DK, Bradford, Dan the man, Dan 2, and Steph. The weather started out great, but the rainstorm started to blow in at mile 15. There was a *great* headwind but at least it didn't start to rain until we were done! South Mountain is quite a workout. It is such a bear, but so good! After the run, we met the Marks at breakfast and I chowed down!
- Here comes the storm! DK on his way down the Mountain
I ran the 22 miles with an average 7:24 pace. I have 12 miles split tomorrow to end this week with 92 miles.
