Keepin’ The Faith

What a great training month March has been. I have stayed healthy, motivated, and have had some great work-outs.  I have been running tons of miles, ended with 90 last week. My Saturday workout consisted of 22 miles with miles 15-20 at 6:30pace and mile 20-22 as fast as I could! I nailed the 5 miles @ 6:28 pace and finished with my last 2 miles at 6:07 and 5:53. This was a big confidence booster for me as I look ahead to my goal pace at Boston.

I was ready to put in 80 miles this week with 2 weight-lifting/core sessions at the gym. I ran 13 miles yesterday (Monday), got my gym on, and came home to find an email from MWC.  Coach John changed my schedule from 80 miles this week to 65 so that I could run an aggressive half marathon (The Arizona Distance Classic in Tucson) on Sunday and shoot for a BIG PR.  eeeek! This PR should be a 1:19 (!!!!) on a good day to a 1:20-1:22:00 on a mediocre day. Holy smoke, can I run a 6:15 pace for 13.1 miles? I will tell you what, it seems a little (ok a lot) daunting to me! It is a course with rolling hills (my fave) so I should be able to run strong. *crossing fingers* I know it will probably hurt, but I need to remember to 'welcome the pain' during a race. yeah...easier said than done.

So my plans this week have changed, I *only* have 65 miles and I am going to try to get some extra rest by running after school instead of in the mornings as I do not have any more doubles this week. I am also just going to get some light core work in on Wednesday rather than do an entire lifting session.  On Friday I DON'T HAVE A RUN!!! *gasp* I cannot remember a day that I have had off of running. I know it will feel totally weird.  :)

So yikes, I am pretty nervous about the half marathon on Sunday. I need some mantras for when it gets tough out there. Got any?

Off to the track!

Run For Ryan House, A Success!

What a day for a race! I woke up at 4:00 am and ate my rice/rice milk/honey mixture. I had some coffee and some Gatorade to complete my healthy breakfast. Lol! We headed over to Mark and Terri’s as they live pretty close to the start line and we wanted to go together.
Once we arrived at the race, Terri and I went for our 2 mile warm-up. When we returned, Matt was nowhere to be found! He had my race shoes, D Tag, and the race was starting in 10 minutes! Ahhhh!!!! I had our good friend Rick, who was announcing the race, call for him over the mic. I was a little frantic (shocking) but Matt and I found each other and I was able to change my shoes with plenty of time. About 5 minutes before the gun, I realized that I really had to pee and the line was so long, I would never make it in time. Coach found me a different restroom and I was able to run there and back with minutes to spare. That was a lifesaver!
At the start line, Rick started giving the shout-outs. This run was very competitive on the female side so I started to get a little nervous.  Sally Meyerhoff was there (and won!). She is a 2:35 marathoner and an incredible runner. I am in awe of her! Susan Loken was there as well. She is getting back into training to qualify for the Olympic Trials. She has already run in the 2004 and 2008 trials. I was so happy to meet her! Katie Ellis was also there as a headliner athlete. Katie is an AMAZING triathlete, like world class amazing! She is just the nicest person too! I knew it would be a great race!

Me, Coach John, and Alanna pre-race

Off we go!

Mile 1- 6:17- Yay! I didn’t start out too fast!

Mile 2- 6:36
Mile 3-6:24
Mile 4- 6:46
Mile 5-7:11 (pretty bummed about this split, it was uphill and with a strong headwind, but I shouldn’t have been that off my goal pace)
Mile 6-6:52
Mile 7-6:34
Mile 8-5:56
Mile 9- 5:39
Mile 10-5:53
Mile 11-6:03
Mile 12- 5:50
Mile 13-5:54
.1-5:38 pace

Official Finish time – 1:22:35   6:18 per mile average pace.

In hindsight I wished I had pushed more on the hills, and I should have been a little faster on the downhills. Easier said now that it is over though! However, I felt it was a great race because:

1.    I thought about keeping control of my form the entire time and not ‘collapsing’.
2.    I used rhythmic breathing to try to stay calm and focused.
3.    My back doesn’t hurt today which means I wasn’t tensing up.
4.    My stomach wasn’t in knots at the finish line.
5.    I was second female, third overall finisher.
6.    I PR’d on a tougher course.
7.    My new ST 4’s were perfect!
8.    Got to meet up with some other fantastic female runners- Katie and Susan!

With MWC after I crossed. He was able to make it to mile 10 to offer some encouragement! Boy did that help!

Congrats to my amazing friends Terri, Mark, and DK who all placed in their age groups and ran amazing races on a very high  mileage week. My dear friends Ken, Jan, and Jim also ran the 5k. Great job and big congrats to them as well. I feel so lucky to have such amazing runner friends!

DK!!

Mark A finishing strong- next up, LA Marathon!

Terri!

Stong finsh, Yay Ter!

Congrats to Coach John who WON the 5k with a time of 16:58!! I wonder what it feels like to be THAT fast?

John Reich (MWC!) ready to cross the finish line for the 5k

Holy smoke!

I really had a great time at the race. It was so organized- however, with running brain I had no idea where to go once I entered DC Ranch! Lol! Matt said “But it was an out and back course, how could you not know where to go?!” I know,  I am just not very observant! The post-race food was amazing and they were giving out Myoplex like it was going out of style. I LOVE that stuff!  So thanks Ryan House for the amazing race. Count me in for next year!

Fellow Brooks IDer John and I. He was second male, 4th overall finisher. Great job John!

NEXT UP: Run for Ryan House Half Marathon…And other jumbled thoughts.

Picture I recieved from Jon, during Lost Dutchman. He was out there snapping pics! Thanks Jon!

So I am very excited to run the 1/2 marathon this Saturday at DC Ranch for the Run For Ryan House 1/2 Marathon. It is for a great cause read about it here! The course should be...hmm...interesting? It is 6.5 miles up, and 6.5 miles down. This should be *fun*! Check out the elevation chart, holy smoke!  The best part of all is that there is scheduled to be some VERY fast women at this event. (Including Terri!) I have been having some stomach trouble in the past few days, I think I am going to attribute it to the green drink I have been having. I am not going to give the brand, because I love this place, but I think the green drink is not so good for me! I am hoping that with my pre-race 3 day ritual of no dairy, excessive fruit, all-rice diet, my stomach will calm down.

Anyways, my goal for this event is to run maybe a bit faster than my 1:22:47 at Lost Dutchman on 2/14. I like hills, and I feel pretty strong on the uphills and downhills (weeeee!!!!) so I will be very happy with a 1:22:xx. However, I would be even happier with better than that but I know I need to be patient! I have been getting more rest this week as I didn't have any doubles. I skipped the gym and I did my running in the afternoons which allowed me to sleep in until 5:30. (wild, I know)

In other news, *drumroll please* I have NEW RACE SHOES!!!! I am sure you have been waiting all day for that tidbit of information. I am wearing the Brooks ST 4. The BEST part of all.....SPARKLEY LACES!!! They even match my bright, bright Brooks race outfit! I plan on wearing them a few more times before Saturday to get to know them better. They felt super light at track last night, like ballet slippers! I think we will have a fine racing date on Saturday.

This week I have had a nice and easy cutback week. The nice part about racing is that track workouts are not as hard as usual. Coach John Reich (MWC! By the way, you should athlink him, he is so unbelievably fast.) gave me 10 miles with 4 miles of cutdowns. I only have 69 miles this week, then I will start climbing again, 86, 90, 80... as I get into my last big push weeks before Boston.

John has also given me my goal time for Boston, but I will save that until we get a little closer and as my confidence grows a bit more!

Even though I had a cutback week, I am still super hungry. I am a stress eater though. I weighed in at 114 today, so it will be interesting to see if there is any affect on my race this weekend.

One last thing, the 2012 marathon trials will be in HOUSTON on Jan 14th of 2012.  It was just announced on Monday.  I read that it will probably be a 5 mile loop course.  Both the men's and women's trials will be held the same day. I was hoping for New York, as I have never been there, but Houston should be nice and flat and warm (er).  So I am excited. Now I just need to run a 2:46 marathon so I can go! Details, details.

Off to make my Mark's famous blueberry tea!

Should not have happened…

On behalf of our Ragnar team, we extend out deepest sympathies and prayers to the Mayasich family and to the friends of Robby. We are all pulling for this young man whom was hit by a car during the Ragnar Relay this weekend. I cannot imagine what those close to Robby are going through. Such a young kid with so much life to live yet. Pull through Robby...

*Update* I learned that Robby passed away on Tuesday. Prayers to the family and friends of Robby. I am so sad about this, it is just so devastating.
